The YG Summit Floorstanders

For those of you familiar with YG Acoustics and the exquisite aluminum shapes that make up their enclosures, perhaps you thought to yourself, “I’d buy a pair of those if they only came in a more traditional wood cabinet.”

Well, that thought has been answered with their Peaks series of loudspeakers.

Incorporating all of the same driver and crossover tech that their other speakers employ, the Peaks series, of which the Summit is the top of the line make use of a thick, machined aluminum front baffle (anodized in a black matte finish) that is bonded to an enclosure made of a special resin that has a wood veneer on the outside.

The result is a pair of speakers that blends a little better with a more traditional decor (or someone that is just metal adverse), and as a variation on the theme, the Summit sounds slightly warmer than the Carmel 3 that we reviewed last year. The Carmel is the entry level to YG’s Reference lineup, and the Summit is the top of the Peaks lineup. Both speakers have a retail price of about $30,000 per pair.

Both are excellent, both deliver great, full-range performance, with the level of clarity and dynamics that YG is known for delivering. We’ll have a full, in-depth, long-term review on the Summits dropping any day, but if you’ve wondered if the Peaks deliver a similar sonic footprint to the Reference speakers, the answer is yes.

With the Summit being a three way speaker, it extends deeper than the Carmel 3, and in most rooms won’t require a subwoofer. However, if you do need the extra push over the cliff, their Descent sub is made to mate perfectly with the Summits.

Overall, the Summits are dynamic, playing any kind of music you might enjoy with ease, and thanks to a sensitivity of 90dB/1-watt, anything from 30 watts per channel will drive them just fine. We used them with everything from our PrimaLuna EVO 100 integrated (40wpc/tubes) to the mighty Pass Labs XS 300 monos. (300wpc/class-a solid state) Currently, they have been the anchor for our publishers living room system with a multitude of integrated amplifiers. It’s an understatement to say he’s smitten.

So, if you’ve always been a fan of the YG sound, but longed for a pair with wood veneer, these are the ones you want.
