AC/DC – Black Ice Black Ice

Columbia CD and LP
AC/DC – Black Ice

I love this band, but the last couple of records were kind of weak. The subject of the songs on Black Ice are pretty much about the same things you would expect on an AC/DC record; cars, chicks, fighting and of course, rock. (four of the fifteen tracks on Black Ice have rock in the title)

At first I thought that I’ve just outgrown AC/DC, but going back to Highway to Hell, Dirty Deeds and Back in Black still make me want to bang my head.  Unfortunately, these guys just haven’t changed much at all in the last 25 years.  It’s not a Bon Scott vs. Brian Johnson argument either, I like both singers.  When Johnson took over after Bon Scott’s untimely death, I had a big smile on my face when I brought Back in Black home.

Black Ice sounds great though.  Both the LP and CD are clean with minimal compression and the big, BIG sound that AC/DC is famous for.  Everyone plays flawlessly and perhaps that’s the problem here, all the edges are smoothed out perhaps too much.  This isn’t a bad record; it just isn’t a brilliant one.

The good news is that these guys are great in concert and are out on tour right now.  That’s really the ultimate AC/DC experience and if you are new to this music, you can catch up on some of the old tracks too.
